How do we learn and how do we remember?

Learning is the process of acquiring new knowledge, skills, and behaviour. It follows us throughout our lives and enables us to adapt to various new situations.

Memory is the ability of storing the knowledge, skills, and behaviour acquired through learning in our brains. We can differentiate between explicit and implicit memory, as well as sensoric, short-term, and long-term memory. These types of memory are frequently misunderstood, so I will try to explain them as easily as possible.

Alexandre Kempf: Blind shrimp, deaf mice, and how I found a job thanks to a YouTube video

Hi Alex, thank you for finding the time to join us for this interview. We are as happy to have you here in our Presenting Alumni session as we were to have you as a project leader in the last three editions of the S3 camp. Your career story is rather non-linear and filled with disappointing research outcomes, so I believe many young alumni will find it encouraging when they face similar things and decisions themselves. But first things first – how would you introduce yourself?

First virtual S3/S3++ Christmas reunion

For the majority of Croatian S3 alumni that are studying or working abroad, it has been a rather normal thing to meet up with friends in Zagreb during Christmas time. And of course, if some of your friends are also S3 alumni, the typical S3/S3++ Christmas reunion is a must! It’s always been an opportunity to meet new people and reunite with the old ones from over the past decade.

That was up until 2020, the year when everything changed, the year when doing social activities online became the new norm. So we thought, why not have our first virtual Christmas reunion?

Roger Penrose

Sir Roger Penrose is one of those names in science you may see so often that you might just think it’s an adjective, especially if your interests happen to be particularly well aligned with his. Penrose’s name crops up in cosmology, quantum mechanics, various mathematical fields and even in philosophy and graphic art. He is also one of this year’s Nobel Prize laureates in physics, which is why his name has been showing up even more frequently than usual. Since his is a name and character worth remembering, we’re bringing you a short overview of his most important endeavors and contributions.
